MAINE ATRICLE

“America’s Modern Day Poet Richard Peacock’s,
Escape from Southern California,
And his search for the perfect seaside town.”

Artist & Poet Richard Peacock of Southern California has been actively searching along with the assistance from a Maine based Realtor, for approximately three years, for the perfect Victorian home w/acreage in or near, a costal town in Maine, where he could afford, to call his second home.

Richard: “When I first started out in the search, I had enough of the stress created by the ridiculously crowded streets & freeways of the cities here in Southern California, along with air pollution and the majority of rude & selfish attitudes that dwell here & have to be treaded thru on a daily basis. The people here seem to feel it is their God given right to be as selfish, rude & arrogant as humanly possible. Their conveyed attitude is that of; the world owes me! I have been ready for a new life elsewhere for many years now!”

“Growing up in and around this sort of environment, it is extremely hard to remain a decent, thoughtful and patient person, living among such lack of thoughtfulness & hatred and a lack of respect toward others and their property. It’s amazing that this environment, which I live, has not stifled my creativity as well as my sense of self, who I am and would like to become one day.”

“I see so much hatred depicted almost daily through the lack of respect for another’s property & life as it’s played out almost daily thru such actions as: graffiti, destruction to homes, vehicles & the lack of respect for life in general. It seems that just about most anything that is not bolted down boarded up or secured by metal bars is to be most likely taken or destroyed that remains here unsecured sooner or later.”

Along with the seemly growing lack of appreciation for artistic expression, creativity, as well as the import of “Gangster/Ghetto RAP” or what I refer to as the “downfall of our society & the demise of several generations”. With such aggressively hateful and self centered messages being projected through out the entirety of each “so called” song. As they teach their youth of today how to disrespect the elders of tomorrow, as the deep & vulgar bass echoes through out the streets & highways, invading your home, you’re thoughts & eventually your soul. It doesn’t take much creativity at all to sample or steal another’s artistic expression and paint a message of hate and disrespect against it’s canvas with words that bludgeon and teach a message of dehumanization.”

“I longed for that perfect quaint little seaside town that I knew still existed, somewhere in the US, possibly the New England area. Where time crawls along and people still have patients and care for one another. Growing up I would watch T.V. shows like “Wings”, “Cheers” & “Fraser” which would for the most part, have an “East Coast” backdrop for each of their shows basis, with the exception of “Fraser” which was suppose to depict the Seattle, Washington area. So I guess there’s no reason why wouldn’t I long for the friendly/fun individuals and beautiful images that were displayed in so many of the episodes, as I lived in this overwhelmingly, morally vacant yet over inhabited State. I knew I needed to escape from this hectic concrete metropolis dubbed Southern California.”

“When I first started out in this journey, I had found a stretch of beautiful acreage on farm land with it’s own small lake and quaint farmhouse that had been built in the early 1900’s in the Northern part of Maine, in a town called Waite. It seemed ironic to me that my grandmother’s maiden name had been Waite, and now to find a town with the same name? It seemed to be fait. I began searching for any an all information about the home and the area, I called a realtor from the area I soon learned that “Waite” was about an hour from the ocean, which was just a bit too far for what I had in mind. Never the less, as I continued to talk to the listing agent, I and began to feel like I had been talking to a distant relative, possibly a father or a grandfather. He seemed very pleasant, kind & extremely calm from what I was use to. I felt instantly home & a part of it all.
Where I come from the typical California demeanor is… “I don’t have the time for you & even if I did, I’m not interested in what you have to say anyway.”

“I continued to learn as much as I could about the beautiful State of Maine & it’s spectacular little seaside townships, as I continued to search for new properties thru the Internet. I fell in love with a small run down Victorian home in a little town called “Cherryfield” just minutes from the ocean & lie along side the Narraguagus River. Of course I wanted to learn as much as possible about this town it was minutes from the ocean, a beautiful structure w/acreage, and very affordable! I did my research on the town and soon came across a Webmaster of the www.cherryfield.us & www.cherryfield.net web sites. I had contacted him with a few questions in an effort to satisfy my craving for more information about the little town dubbed as “The Blueberry Capitol Of The World!”

“The man from Cherryfield was kind enough to offer answer any and all of my questions about the township and the area in which it lies. After another e-mail or two he asked me to give him a call, I did just that! When I contacted him, he was extremely kind & helpful, a true gentleman. He provided me with all I needed to know about this little town in Washington County. He even went as far as to send me photos of the home I was particularly interested in, as well as offered to take a few new ones. I now consider him a friend, which I have made thru the Internet! After much consideration I placed an offer on the home, which was accepted by it’s owners, then a fallen out escrow, due to an under valued appraisal, much lower than the asking price & some of my own insecurities about the value of the home caused me to not peruse the purchase of this home any further. I finally had the chance to vacation in Maine just two years ago and once again last year in September of 2007 where I was able to see much of the East Coast along with my beloved Cherryfield. I flew into Boston with my wife and we toured up the coast toward Maine. We spent the night at a beautiful beach area called Rye Beach, NH; we made it all the way to Cherryfield the next day! To this day I am still searching for that affordable piece of land with a worn thin but well aged Victorian or Farmhouse in a beautiful Maine town. I know someday I will eventually find and own my piece of Maine’s beautiful Victorian history. I have found several properties, which I am extremely interested in; one of them soon enough will be mine. I promise I will make a wonderful neighbor and a nice addition to your little seaside town, wherever it may be, every summer, spring & fall. I hope to eventually end up a full time resident there. Only time will tell. God bless.
